The MSCEIT (Mayer Salovey Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test) is an ability-based EI test that objectively measures your proficiency in the four abilities of emotional intelligence - Perceive, Use, Understand, and Facilitate, and eight tasks – Faces, Pictures, Facilitation, Sensations, Changes, Blends, Emotion Management, and Emotion Relations. Your test answers are scored against the correct answers as determined by 21 emotion researchers.
The test consists of 141 items and is quite different from other EQ tests. First, there are better and worse answers on the MSCEIT. In other words, there are right and wrong answers – you may receive partial credit for some answers. Second, MSCEIT questions do not ask for your personal reaction. You need to select the most effective strategies for getting desired results or the most correct answers. For example, on the Pictures task, we do not ask how the designs or landscapes make you feel, we want to know what they are communicating. Third, some MSCEIT questions may not seem relevant to the work you do. The experience of taking the MSCEIT will likely be different than the experience of taking other tests. Fourth, the MSCEIT is measuring emotional skills in an objective, but indirect way. Research has shown that scores on the MSCEIT are related to certain aspects of real-world performance.
The test takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to complete. One of our MSCEIT-certified practitioners will provide you with a 1-hour online feedback session to discuss and make meaning of your results. If you want to explore your results further, our team is available to provide one-on-one coaching to help you leverage your strengths and improve in areas that matter to you.
