DAVID R. CARUSO, PhD co-founded the Emotional Intelligence (EI) Skills Group.
I am a psychologist who focuses on the assessment and development of emotional intelligence. After grad school (Case Western) where I focused on defining and measuring intelligence in new ways in Doug Detterman's lab. Afterwards, I did a two-year post-doc (Yale) studying theories and measurement of intelligence (Bob Sternberg) and its development (Ed Zigler) intending to enter academia. Instead, for family reasons, I entered the business world. First up was a market researcher, then a corporate planner, followed by a product line manager role (with P&L responsibility), and finally as a self-employed consulting psychologist. Along with that flexible identity, I had simultaneous part-time roles in marketing (at a product design firm), conducting executive assessment (at an HR firm), and 16 years conducting organizational development work (at Yale College). In my various roles, I have assessed thousands of people on EI, personality and career interests. I have developed and conducted practical, hands-on EI skill training sessions around the world.
I do not consider myself an academic as I never held a paid role as a professor. I did serve as a Research Affiliate in the Department of Psychology at Yale for several years. This was a part-time, unpaid position so I do not count this as being an ‘academic’. At the same time, I conducted a good deal of research and along the way, I co-authored dozens of articles (peer reviewed journal articles, reviews and chapters), the Mayer Salovey Caruso Emotional Intelligence Tests (MSCEIT), and four books: The Emotionally Intelligent Manager (with Peter Salovey), The Leader’s Guide to Solving Challenges with Emotional Intelligence (with Lisa Rees), Developing Your Emotional Intelligence Skills (with Lisa Rees) and The Educator’s Practical Guide to Emotional Intelligence (with Lisa and David Adams).
My current goals include completing a co-edited book on emotional intelligence (with John Pellitteri), conducting certification workshops for the newly-revised MSCEIT and completing the New England 67 (the 67 4,000-foot peaks in New England).
