Emotional Intelligence

About

DAVID R. CARUSO, PhD co-founded the Emotional Intelligence (EI) Skills Group.

I am a psychologist who focuses on the assessment and development of emotional intelligence. In grad school (Case Western) I focused on defining and measuring intelligence in new ways in Doug Detterman's lab. Afterwards, I did a two-year post-doc (Yale) developing new theories and measurements of intelligence (Bob Sternberg) and examining how to develop intelligence (Ed Zigler) intending to enter academia. Instead, for family reasons, I entered the business world. First up was a job as a market researcher in NYC where I was promoted to group research manager. Next, I was a strategic planner (market research) at a Fortune 200 company, followed by a product line manager role at the same company (with international P&L responsibility and directs), and finally, as a self-employed consulting psychologist. Along with this consulting identity, I held simultaneous part-time roles in marketing (at a product design firm), conducting executive assessment (at an HR firm), and for 16 years as special assistant to the dean of the college for organizational development work (at Yale). In my various roles, I have assessed thousands of people on EI, personality and career interests. I have developed and conducted practical, hands-on EI skill training sessions around the world (e.g., Brazil, China, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Spain, UK, US) - not sure how many, but quite a lot.

I do not consider myself an academic as I have not held a paid role as a professor. I did serve as a Research Affiliate in the Department of Psychology at Yale for several years. This was a part-time, unpaid position so I do not count this as being an ‘academic’. At the same time, I conduct a good deal of research and have co-authored dozens of articles (peer reviewed journal articles, reviews and chapters), the Mayer Salovey Caruso Emotional Intelligence Tests (MSCEIT), and four books: The Emotionally Intelligent Manager (with Peter Salovey), The Leader’s Guide to Solving Challenges with Emotional Intelligence (with Lisa Rees), Developing Your Emotional Intelligence Skills (with Lisa Rees) and The Educator’s Practical Guide to Emotional Intelligence (with Lisa and David Adams).

My current goals include completing a co-edited book on emotional intelligence (with John Pellitteri), conducting certification workshops for the newly-revised MSCEIT and completing the New England 67 (I have completed 62 of the 67 4,000-foot peaks in New England).
