MSCEIT 2 for RESEARCH
We get a lot of requests from researchers about using the MSCEIT 2. Below is what you need to know.
Probably the first thing to know is that the authors of MSCEIT 2 do own the rights. In fact, when I use MSCEIT 2 for my applied work I have to buy it. The MSCEIT 2 and its different versions are owned and published by Multi-Health Systems, MHS, of Toronto Canada.
The MSCEIT 2 is a 94-item ability-based measure of emotional intelligence assessing four domains: perceiving, connecting, understanding and managing emotions (see, for example, Mayer & Salovey, 1997; Mayer, Caruso & Salovey, 2016). It is available online only. (The original version of MSCEIT is no longer available.)
Each on-line MSCEIT 2 report costs 72 USD. (Please note that these prices change periodically.) However, MHS offers researchers access to “scored datasets,” an Excel file with all scores for a very reduced fee per participant. Please note that MHS does not release a scoring key for the MSCEIT. To obtain the MSCEIT 2 please contact MHS at customerservice@mhs.com or 800-456-3003.
Features of MSCEIT 2 that researchers may find of particular interest are:
5 attention check items built into the assessment
the ability to assess all or some of the 4 domains
A single, self-report item at the end (I did worse than average, the same, better)
Be smart about emotions.
Emotions - the right ones at the right time - help you make better decisions.
